Has political discourse at the city, state and national level become toxic?
Since the creation of this country, First Amendment protected heated political exchange has been at the heart of our democracy. Disagreement between the political parties as well as disagreement between members of the same political party have been ever present. However, with the addition of the ability to provide opinions anonymously to unlimited audiences via electronic media, the tenor of that exchange has indeed changed. Americans need to now understand that just because something is posted on the internet does not make it either true or valuable. Internet commentary is protected by the First Amendment, but that does not necessarily make it a verifiable news source or a useful resource.
